Lighthouse Holiday Photoshoot

Ah, the glamorous life of the retail entrepreneur; garbage taker-outer, packer, shipper, customer service gal, boss, ad executive, marketing guru, and sometimes you have to do your own photo shoot.

It is not always a pretty sight!  I am frequently down in the dirt or kneeling on rocks to try and get the picture to line up right. Really classy when it's me battling the wind, carrying a pile of pillows; most of the time dropping a few, and brushing off the sand or the weeds.  Frequently the shadows, or the lighting will just not cooperate.

Or there are too many people snooping around that want to see what you are doing...

We were trying to be prepared (ha ha ha) this holiday season,  and have our pillows here early for holiday promotions. Somehow the time line snuck up on us again and I found myself in the Mini Cooper driving up and down our coast last week to figure out how we could shoot some images that were actually usable for upcoming magazine ads.

Lots of bad pics taken - thought you all might enjoy anyway!  (the views were pretty cool though!)

Sometimes I just give up and enjoy the view.

A Driftwood Centerpiece - Coastal Holiday Ideas

This holiday season, I finally admitted that I needed a little help with maintaining our site and customer service phone calls.  So lucky to have found Serena!  She's a beach girl that enjoys life in Santa Cruz, her specialty is creating fabulous art and jewelry from sea glass and found beach treasures from here on our Northern California Coast.

I am also lucky, because she brought me a big tin of homemade cookies this week, along with a wonderful driftwood centerpiece filled with brilliant succulents for the holidays.

Here are Serena's notes with details on how you could create your own driftwood and cactus planter. Great gift idea for people that forget to water, like me!

For the driftwood planter select a piece of driftwood that has a flat spot on the bottom or knots that will keep the piece stable, you don't want it rolling off the table once it's planted! Choose the area you want to be hollowed out and mark it with a pencil.

I drilled multiple holes in the driftwood with my drill press to make a channel to put plants inside. Succulents, or cacti are a great choice since they don't need much watering! Don't drill all the way through the wood, leave at least a 1/2" undrilled. I used a piece of rough grit sandpaper to smooth down the edges and the inside. If you have time and you'd like to seal the inside with a waterproof stain that's a good idea. This takes several coats and needs to dry overnight. Or you can just use mini pots to fit into the channel and plant inside the pots. If you haven't waterproofed your planter then just water it outside and let it dry and then bring it inside.

Another tip; you could use a heavy plastic garbage can liner, cut it to size so it fits just below the edge of your planter. You don't want it to show. I used some peat moss to cover the mini terracotta pots that I placed inside the planter. Another fun idea is to use some floral wire and cut it to the height that you'd like your decorations to be inside the planter and then glue some shells, starfish, sea glass, or other sea inspired treasures to your wire and poke into the planted pots. This adds another level of beachy flare to your design!

I love mine!

It's a Sea Turquoise Christmas!

This year,  I am promising myself one tree in my house will be decorated with my favorite colors of the sea; aquas, teals, turquoise and blues, bright white shells and sparkling glitter. (might be my tiny tree!) Hope you enjoy some of the inspiration images that I have been collecting on our "Coastal Holidays" board on Pinterest!

One of my favorite trees from Coastal Living Magazine! I have actually copied this ribbon idea for several years, as I can't find just the right tree topper that works with my collection of ornaments...

Love the purple ribbon!  via Coastal Living

Love that teal coral chair!  Pretty Siamese kitty too...

Last years' mini-tree with a lovely gift from my friend Judy.

Here's a few ideas to add Sea-Turquoise to your Beachy Holiday!

Have a Beachy Christmas!

Now for the big decision; do we wait for another week, or do we break down and get the tree this weekend?   Wishing you all a wonderful Holiday Weekend with friends and family -

Confessions of a Professional Beachcomber

I am so excited about our new holiday collection from Chris, I think you will be too! I asked her if she'd like to write a guest blog post explaining her inspiration for her designs, and she was more than gracious to stay up late one night, typing, when I know she'd rather be painting!  This is her story, in her words sent over to me.  As a fellow Pacific Northwest girl, I can totally understand why she's inspired by the scenery, and lifestyle in the Puget Sound.

These stockings are only a small selection of her fabulous holiday collection!

Guest blogger: Crabby Chris

It’s true, what they say about self-employment:   When you work for yourself, you only have to labor half a day; then you can do whatever you want in the remaining twelve hours.   Aside from the requisite six hours of sleep, I must have my recommended daily allowance of beachwalking – for research, of course, for my handpainted beach-inspired pillows.

The R&D process takes me to water’s edge; here I draw inspiration from the fascinating life forms, colors, sights, scents and sounds of the place where the ocean meets the land.   Living on an island in Puget Sound, I am sensitized to the rhythms of nature, the water’s ebb and flow, the angle of the sun, the calls of the seabirds.  I love to paint images of the creatures with which I share this beautiful locale, and also those that populate the exotic places I have yet to experience.

When our amazing shrinking family moved to our beach house a few years ago, I began doing lots of “beachy” activities – assembling Adirondack chairs, sewing crustacean quilts, and painting pillows for our sundrenched deck.   Soon our neighbors noticed our bright-colored crab pillows and wanted some of their own.  One day I asked a local shop owner if my painted pillows might help market her colorful outdoor furniture.  They did, and suddenly I was painting and sewing pillows six days a week.   You can usually tell what I’ve been working on from the color of paint under my fingernails.

I have a few things to confess... with the sincere hope that the reader will not judge me too harshly
  1. I paint in my jammies
  2. When on the beach I sometimes lose track of time.
  3. I prefer Dungeness crab over lobster
  4. I've never seen a piece of driftwood I didn't like.
  5. On really busy days, I forget to apply makeup - sorry.
  6. I am compelled to photograph as many sunsets as possible
  7. The squawk of a great blue heron sounds like music to me
  8. I sometimes awaken at 3:30 am with a fabulous design idea
  9. I have collected more seashells than I can count

They say confession is good for the soul.  I must admit I feel a little better coming clean, but I sincerely hope that  others not  become unduly burdened by these disturbing revelations.  The next time you see a sunburned blonde with paint under her nails, please be kind.  She doesn’t get much sleep.

(I think she looks pretty great for no sleep, and no makeup!)

I put together these collages of coastal holiday decorating ideas - all featuring Chris' awesome tree skirts. I have never seen any beach house decor done like her designs, all finely finished - they will last a lifetime, and will become treasured family favorites.

Traditional red and green colors, but with a decidedly "beachy" flair!  The tumbled sea glass ornaments are also products from another Pacific Northwest artist.....
I call this collection Nantucket - with the nautical touches of miniature striped buoys and bright green lobsters, and candy cane striped lighthouse stockings.

Blues, Aquas, seashells and a more than a few mermaids!  (P.S.  The Mermaid stockings can be customized with different hair color shades)
Highlighted with corals, red and white decorations - this would be an easy look to complete for your shore holidays!

All of these coastal holiday decorating ideas can be found online in our Beach Coastal Holiday Category!

Shellophilia: Incurable, but treatable (Gosh, I hope not!)

Guest post from an incredibly talented artist, and very good beach girl buddy,  Chris Anderson Chenault.  Enjoy!

.....It is said that there is only one hobby that is also a recognized mental illness; bibliophilia, the compulsion to collect and store books...

Evidently, the members of that think tank have never met a hardcore sheller!

We can't help it.  Somehow, any time we get near a sea shell, it inexplicably follows us home.  In advanced cases, this behavior has been known to expand to include other categories; such as "flotsam" and "jetsam". Oy

Spending hours and days on the beach with one's chin on one's upper chest and eyes trained on the sand/rocks/pebbles/driftwood/dune grass isn't such a bad way to experience nature.  And when the weather is foul, spending comparable hours prowling the offerings of obscure flea markets and little-known shops can be equally rewarding.

Ah, the thrill of the treasure hunt!

We sneak back into the domicile lugging suspiciously bulging objects in plain brown wrappers.  When inquiring minds in the household cast questioning looks our way, a feasible response is always at the ready: It's for "A Project"!  (note the capital A and P)

I believe the clinical term is "justification".....

Now comes the pressure of producing the proof of the "The Project".    Easy!  We're preparing for the next holiday!  Every year our island home features a big Christmas tree covered in shells, most of them gathered from our own beach.  The white on green with little (non-flashing) lights is beachy and forest-y at the same time.  Which suits me just fine, since our local forest come right down to our local beaches.

Some our ornaments are:

  • oyster shell with pearl added
  • Sand dollars with mono-filament line through the keyholes
  • finger starfish with silver thread through bead caps on one end
  • tropical whelks lightly dusted with opalescent sparkle
  • restaurant scallop shells (why waste them???)
  • Local cockle shells highlighted with pearlescent acrylic paint
  • The obligatory Dungeness crab claw accents with gold
  • Fragments of coral
How many ornaments?  In this case, nothing succeeds like excess. We display literally hundreds of these, but they store compactly in a document box during the other eleven months.  Seashells are delicate and tough at the same time, and grandchildren have been known to chew on sea stars.  I love that our ornaments are intended to be manhandled by our little guests.  Anything that is pokey or treasured is hung out of reach.

Seashells are beautiful tied to gift packages, and a garland of sea stars is perfectly charming above a doorway or among the folds of window treatments.

A very happy holiday season to all, and God Bless us, every one!

Chris
