Stripes - Always a Classic Look for Beach Homes!

Pretty Cool!  We are never sure when a magazine requests products and product images if they are going to be featured - so fun when we get to see our coastal decor appear in the pages of HGTV Magazine!  Look for our gorgeous Aqua Tideline Lamp in their fun "Everybody Loves Stripes" article.

We highly agree with the HGTV style editors; not only do stripes look good all year round, they just simply spell coastal cool and classic.
The Tideline Lamp also comes in two other sea shore colors if aqua or turquoise are not your color shades - try navy blue or even a soft neutral sandy stripe.

Here are a few other easy ideas to add some summer stripes to your beach home:

Coastal Design Tip: Choosing the Right Size Rug

So it's time for an update in your coastal living room, and you have decided to start with an area rug. Great idea - perfect way to start your new re-design!  But choosing the right size area rug to fit your furniture and fit your room can sometimes be a little bit tricky. Choosing a size for your living room definitely depends on the room size and arrangement of your furniture, and how you like to direct the flow of traffic in your living space.
Here are a few tips that we hope will make it a little bit easier to choose the right size and dimensions for your space!
1. The Most Popular Sizes for Smaller Living Rooms - All Legs off of the Rug: 5' x 8', 5' x 7.6' or  6' x 9 (for super small spaces - try even a 3' x 5')

In smaller spaces or when you prefer to keep all of the legs of your sofa and chairs off of the rug, these sizes work best. With only a coffee table placed in the center of the rug, this leaves a spacious and airy feel, at the same time creating a cozy complete living room space.
For example create a room arrangement like these examples:
Sea Glass Sand Dollars and Shells Rug
Sea Glass Swirls Rug
Starfish Blue Rug
Nautical Plaid Rug

2.  Larger Spaces - Only Front Legs on the Rug: Try an 8' x 10' or larger
Most commonly, people choose to put all front legs of their furniture on the rug while leaving the back legs off. An 8’ x 10’ size brings all of your furniture pieces in the room together and creates a complete look. Looks best if your coffee table is larger, or in a square or round shape too. Also a perfect idea for accommodating a large ottoman that you use for double purposes as your coffee table.  (my favorite idea for space and storage!)
A Few Examples:

Sea Breeze Rug

3.  Larger Spaces -  ALL Legs on the Rug: Try a 9' x 12' or larger
In a larger living room, a 9’ x 12’ (or larger) rug with all furniture placed on the rug pulls the room together and creates a warm and inviting cozy living space.  Will give your room a cohesive look with real panache!

Here are a few more examples of coastal living rooms with different rug layouts for more even more inspiration!  Remember - decorating is all about you and your lifestyle at the beach.  There doesn't have to be any rules, your space just needs to reflect YOU and needs to be a welcome, cozy space.

Decorating Tip Essential: Model Sailboats

The essential design element to add to your coastal living space is a large scale model sailboat or even a regatta - take a look!

Designer Libby Langon's Room featuring the Tangerine and Navy Cooper Square Rug at Caron's Beach House

To give your room a sophisticated, classic polished finish and to instantly bring in the romance of sailing and life beside the sea. Wind in your sails, the call of seabirds, an afternoon exploring rocky coves, the rush of the sea...

A gorgeous dark blue model sailer from HGTV, showcasing designer Sarah Richardson's Summer Home .  Creating a welcoming statement focal point for her lovely dining room, this large scale sail boat really stands out!

Setting the tone for a traditional Nantucket styled cottage! This large red and white linen sailboat sits atop a antique sofa table creating a not only a focal point in this charming living room, but also serves as wall decor too. (source Homebunch)

Don't you love how this large scale sailing model mimics the pitch of the dining room ceiling?  Perfect use of space while making a beautiful nautical design statement!

Designer Anthony Barratta never fails to impress! I adore that bright red accent wall decorated with vintage china plates with small sailboats - warm and bold. Can only imagine the interesting dinner conversations that take place here, especially on a cold night with a roaring fire in the background... (source Anthony Baratta Design)

A family's love of boating is exemplified in this beautiful dining room highlighted with a sail boat gracing the buffet cabinet. No need for extra wall art, this maritime piece says it all and becomes the focus point of the well-appointed room of a Delaware Summer Beach Home. (source: House Beautiful)

If one large model sailboat seems to overwhelm your space, love the idea of creating your own small regatta! Like designer Libby Langdon put together beautifully in the 2012 Hampton's Showhouse. (Tradtional Home)

(not sure of image source - sorry.)

Lovely idea for beach cottage homes too. Display a collection of vintage and newly found model sailers, creating interest with different sizes and colors - no need to be matchy-matchy/boring-boring. (not sure of image source - sorry)

Take your time and hunt for one with a beautifully varnished hull, brass fitting details, and a large white linen or cotton sail (think of the "True Love" in the Philadelphia Story!)

My friend Kathy has a really awesome collection of sailboats displayed in her beach home on Hood Canal. This vignette is just one of the images that I captured when she gave us a tour last summer.  Super cool because Kathy and Mike escape the cold and wet Pacific Northwest winters on their sailboat cruising the Sea of Cortez....

Personally, I like to think the treasure hunt is one of the best parts of decorating....

Have fun with this idea at your coastal home.  Antique stores and flea markets are great places to look for vintage sailers, but if you don't have easy access to great nautical vintage finds, we do have over 50 different styles of model sailing boats on our site that are based on real vintage sailing and yachting vessels.  Come explore!
